The calendar says spring, but winter hasn't let go quite yet. But there is hope, and Dawn is hosting an Early Spring Field Day. Don't miss it!

Various and Sundry

My minutes are precious this morning, so just a quick rundown:

My youngest sister is having laparoscopy surgery this morning to remove two cysts, one on each ovary. Please pray that it will be smooth and no surprises.

My son woke up with a stomach virus last night...and was up almost the whole night. Ah--can you hear it? It's the little voice saying "It's Holy Week!" It always comes with the extra sufferings to help walk in Christ's footsteps at Calvary. Pray for his recovery. He doesn't understand why he can't have food and drink.

Sarah has completed the The Loveliness of John Paul II. It's just beautiful! The entries are so moving.

Kristen wrote a beautiful piece entitled The Infertile Catholic.

There is a new beautiful section on the 4RealLearning Board called Our Mother's Garden of Sorrow. It's not a discussion board, but just a visual garden, with comfort and prayers written for those sorrows in life, tied in with the Our Lady and her Seven Sorrows.

I'm so excited about other bloggers and their Pysanky excitement. Suzanne took a trip down memory lane and Mary G. did her first attempt at Pysanky Eggs with Mary M. Even with the loss of two eggs, the survivors are gorgeous!

I'm enjoying seeing Holy Week unfold at Maryan's blog with her Holy Week presentations. She is definitely inspiring me.

My sister got to see the Sandhills Cranes as they migrate through Nebraska. There's a wonderful Crane Cam to follow these. You can see them mostly inthe morning and evening. At this moment the audio has some problems. Yesterday that was my "soundtrack" for the day, just listening to Rowe Sanctuary noises. So calming and beautiful. Yes, I know it's lovely outside my house, too, but we're a little under the weather here.

And one more little note. A priest at a nearby church mentioned that small little pancakes (i.e., silver dollars) were a traditional food for Spy Wednesday. I see the connection and absolutely love it. I do have to admit it must be a newer tradition for if pancakes were a Fat Tuesday dish to eat up all the eggs and dairy due to fasting restrictions, they certainly wouldn't be part of Holy Week fare. But our fasting rules aren't the same, so enjoy your silver dollar pancakes to remember the 30 coins that Judas received to betray Jesus.

That's about all the time I have today for computer. It's back to the couch and snuggle with my son. We're hobbling through our Holy Week. Anyone have suggestions for bringing one's voice back? I can't shake this laryngitis, and it's so hard to read our Holy Week books!

Tell Me Why

This 4Real thread, Tell My Why Tuesday, wonders how our blogs titles came to be.

I have no poetic or fancy story. My original intention for blogging was recording our family life, our Domestic Church, particularly in how it fits in the Liturgical Year. After my family, living the Liturgical Year in the Home is one of my favorite subjects. So the combination seemed like a perfect duo.

The title came to me gradually. I wanted to record daily ebbs and flows in our Catholic family and thoughts and ponderings along our journey. Family life and the Liturgical Year has both its everyday, non-festival days and the feast days. The Church calls days without feasts "Ferial days" or the Latin feria, so it was a perfect fit. Here are some definitions of feria. Later I have found definitions in other languages that refer to feria as a holiday or fair, the complete opposite of my intended meaning, so it might cause some confusion.

In including all the important points, I just incorporated a little alliteration, came up with the title. I first started blogging my food blog, Family Food in Feast and Feria (which has been sorely neglected as of late), which includes the extra "F" in the title, and this "Family in Feast and Feria" came a few months later.

Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers for our health. I was spared and didn't have the stomach virus symptoms, but a few minor ones that I was able to keep going. It's a good thing, because dh and ds took a long while to get back to good health. We hunkered down and focused on getting well and catching up on Lent, as we had lost a week.

Aprons – Y/N?
Yes, when I remember. I'm extremely messy. I need some better aprons, though, and a hook to hang them!

Baking – Favorite thing to bake:
Special cakes and breads for birthdays and feast days.

Clothesline – Y/N?
HOA won't allow outdoors clotheslines. I have indoor drying racks I use.

Donuts – Have you ever made them?
No, I have always wanted to try my hand. I was thinking making some for Fat Tuesday this year. Fastnachts anyone?

Every day – One homemaking thing you do every day:
Dishes

Freezer – Do you have a separate deep freeze?
No

Garbage Disposal – Y/N?
Yes.

Handbook – What is your favorite homemaking resource?
Until now, really didn't have one. I use

Ironing – Love it or hate it?
Love it when I have the time and energy. I especially love doing tablecloths and napkins -- very rewarding.

Junk drawer – Y/N? Where is it?
Kitchen, desk drawers, other drawers scattered around the house.

Kitchen: Design & Decorating?
Ugly and a work in progress. Right now tan paint and floral wallpaper with oak cabinets. Floor is a pergo type faux tile.

Love: What is your favorite part of homemaking?
Being home with my children.

Mop - Y/N?
Yes, but not often enough.

Nylons - Wash by hand or in the washing machine?
Machine in a nylon bag, of course!

Oven - Do you use the window, or open the door to check?
Open the door.

Pizza - What do you put on yours?
You mean homemade? Doesn't happen here.

Quiet - What do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment?
Ummm...a few minutes before ds wakes up? And I mean only 2 or 3!

Binder, recipe software and lots of cookbooks.

Style of house -
Not quite sure. Colonial with wrap around porch?

Tablecloths and napkins - Y/N?
Tablecloths happen on feast days, otherwise we'd have dinner on the floor every night.

Napkins are paper. Please don't throw tomatoes!

Under the kitchen sink - Organized or toxic wasteland?
Toxic

Vacuum - How many times per week?
Once a week

Wash - How many loads of laundry do you do a week?
8 loads a week. We're a smaller family.

X's - Do you keep a daily list of things to do and cross them off?
Not always, but it's satisfying when I do.

Yard - Who does what?
Husband!

Zzz's - What is your last homemaking task for the day before going to bed?
Fill up the water pitcher.
