Are You Experiencing a St. Luke's Little Summer?

Yesterday, October 18, was the feast of St. Luke, Evangelist.

What kind of weather are you experiencing? From The Old Farmer's Almanac:

St. Luke's Little Summer is a period of summerlike days that occurs around October 18, named to honor the saint's feast day. In olden days, St. Luke's Day did not receive as much attention in the secular world as St. John's Day (June 24) and Michaelmas (September 29), so to keep from being forgotten, St. Luke presented us with some golden days to cherish before the coming of winter -- or so the story goes. Some folks call this Indian summer, but that officially occurs between November 11 and November 20.

I know there's a cold front moving across the central US, but here in Virginia we are definitely experiencing a St. Luke's Little Summer, with 70 degree sunny days. Thank you, St. Luke!

I have never heard that. How funny. We have had remarkably warm (OK, hot) temperatures here the past few days. Today, however, it was in the 40s. Nice change, overall. St. Luke's Little Summer has a nicer ring to it that "Global warming, glaciers melting, we are all doomed!!"

Jenn, this is so neat! I had never heard of St. Luke's Little Summer before. And wouldn't you know it, here in New England it is definitely warmer than usual - 70 yesterday and almost the same today! Much colder temps are forecasted for next week, though.

This will make such a nice addition to our religion notebooks - thank you, Jenn! (And thank you St. Luke!) :)

Yes, we are! I have never heard it called a St. Luke's Summer, but that is most definitely what this is. Sadly, it is supposed to rain tomorrow, but it was great while it lasted!

Brrrr...our St. Luke's Little Summer just fled with a vengeance, but it was nice while it lasted! I love the weather saints...it's fun to read the old almanacs and see the connections.

Actually, we did! But now there is snow mixed in with the rain. The temperature dropped nearly 20 degrees this afternoon!

That is fascinating! We are certainly experiencing a Little Summer here. It is expected to be 90 degree today!

We are having a St.Luke's Summer here too - unusually warm (low 60s), but a mix of wet and dry days. To add to the liturgical connections, warm weather around November 11th is also known as St.Martin's Summer.
